WELCOME to the McPherson Planning Local Redevelopment Authority’s (MPLRA) official website! 

Fort McPherson was established in 1885 as a military post on a site near Atlanta selected by General Winfield Scott Hancock. It was planned and laid out by Captain Joshua W. Jacobs around a 400’ by 1600’ parade ground.  In 1889, the post was named Fort McPherson in honor of Major General James Birdseye McPherson, a Union general who was killed in a battle near Atlanta.  Over the years, the fort expanded to its present 487.45 acres and became the headquarters of the U. S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM). 

Effective November 9, 2005, the Base Closure and Realignment Commission voted to close Fort McPherson.  US Army officials are planning for the military drawdown process that must begin within two years and be completed within six years of the November 9 beginning date.  

The citizens of Atlanta presented the strongest case possible to retain Fort McPherson.  Now that the BRAC Commission has made its decision to close it, the time has come to develop an effective strategy for economic recovery.  Accordingly, the McPherson Planning Local Redevelopment Authority, Inc. (a nonprofit corporation) was formed in December of 2005 to assume, on behalf of the Cities of Atlanta and East Point, Fulton County, and the State of Georgia, the responsibility and authority for 1.) investigating the needs of the local communities, 2.) planning the reuse and economic development of the real estate and 3.) to serve on behalf of the stakeholders as the sole point of contact regarding base reuse planning with the Department of Defense’s Office of Economic Adjustment and the Department of the Army.
